Karl-Heinz Steck

Biography

Karl-Heinz Steck is an artist and stage and costume designer. His work encompasses theatre productions, museum and exhibition spaces, sculptures and objects.

He trained in wood and stone sculpture at the HTL technical school in Innsbruck. He then assisted stage designer Heinz Hauser and studied sculpture with Alik Cavaliere at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. In New York, he assisted the artist Mario Merz.

He designed sets and costumes for drama, opera and dance theatre at the Munich Volkstheater, Tyrol State Theatre, Theater Regensburg, Munich Kammerspiele and Salzburg State Theatre, among others. From 2003 to 2023 he served on the board of the Tiroler Volksschauspiele in Telfs and shared responsibility for its scenographic direction.

His spatial projects include the Historical City Information installation in Lutherstadt Wittenberg (2014), the exhibition “Which Deeds Become Images?” at the Magdeburg Cultural History Museum (2023), and Basecamp in Gerlos. His sculptures and objects have been exhibited in Milan, Genoa, Kitzbühel, Hamburg and Istanbul, among other places.

In 2026 he completed the certificate course “Artists in Cultural Education” at the Bundesakademie für Kulturelle Bildung Wolfenbüttel.
